Job Seekers and AP Life

Google is the most desirable employer for recent college grads in the US, according to a Universum survey published in Business Week. No surprise there; without seeing the survey my college-sophomore daughter guessed Google right at #1, and she had Apple up there too. Apple is #3.

But there are some surprises on that list. The CIA and FBI are both in the top 10. Is that the impact of network television? But the Peace Corp and Teach for America are #5 and #10 on the list, and the State Department is #4 on the list. I’m not sure whether that means spooks or do-gooders, as these days it’s hard to figure what the State department stands for.  The Mayo Clinic is #14. Who says this country is polarized?

Disney is #2 on the list, and some other “glamour” companies, Nike, Sony, and of course Microsoft, are there.

I was surprised, however, to find that the top 25 list includes a flock of dark-suit-and-white-shirt companies. PriceWaterhouseCoopers is #7, and the graduates also listed Goldman Sachs, Ernst & Young (tax shelters anyone?). Deloitte & Touche, Merrill Lynch, and JP Morgan. That’s a lot of 22-year-old noses to the grindstones, no? I thought the idea was people have to get older and wiser (battered into submission by mortgages, setbacks, and maturity?)  before those jobs look attractive.
