Marc Andreessen on why not to do a startup

by Tim Berry on June 19, 2007

in Business Stories, Starting a Business, Teaching Business

This is an excellent post from Marc Andreessen, particularly if you keep in mind he’s been spectacularly successful and has lived at the very high end of the world of venture capital startups. I don’t think it applies uniformly to all startups, but it is something every startup should read.

While Marc spoke about the negatives associated with start-up, the fact is he voted otherwise – three times!!
This means, as I read it, entrepreneurs think in terms of positives and have an inate belief that no matter what the obstacles they will prevail. The true entrepreneur sees negatives simply as obstacles to be overcome, not barriers to entry.

I agree. And I think there's also some satisfaction in presenting the negatives when in fact his startups have been, in Marc's case, amazing. It's contrarian, dog bites man.
